CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT involves working with our Newcastle-based psychologists to find a way of interrupting thoughts, feelings and behaviour cycles that are causing problems in the client's life. Through talking and practising the coping techniques that our therapists work with our clients to develop, cognitive-behavioural therapy targets and aims to change the thought processes that cause the negative feelings. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends CBT as the therapy of choice for those suffering problems with depression, anxiety, panic, OCD, and PTSD among others.
ACT – Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has similar goals as CBT (to improve well-being in times of difficulty) though aims to do this by teaching the skills to accept and tolerate difficulty, rather than constantly striving against them, to live in the present moment. Through working with our team of counsellors and psychologists, clients develop ways to effectively handle stress by clarifying what is important to them in day to day life in spite of the difficulties they are experiencing. This therapy is recommended by Newcastle Psychologist & Counselling to help with adjustment to life transitions, such as divorce and retirement, and dealing with worry, pain and some forms of anxiety.
Mindfulness is about learning the skill of recognising and letting go of problematic thoughts without effort or striving. Often presented as part of ACT (see above), mindfulness helps manage stress and "ground" you in the present moment with a clearer focus. Though often thought of in meditation, the aim of mindfulness is to take the skills learnt in therapy and meditation and apply them into your everyday life. Our psychologists often record an individualised meditation for you during your therapy session to use at home as well as helping you develop vital mindfulness skills in our session.
Systemic and family therapy approaches are used by our counsellors and psychologists to help families and couples who are facing difficulties in the context of their relationships. When working with systemic therapies, positive change is seen as being possible through developing awareness of, and making changes in behaviour and communication styles between those in the system thereby resolving problems and improving the quality of relationships. Systemic therapies take into account how our relationships, the world and the wider system impact on our everyday lives and influence the way we feel.
